July: Mapping the Self:
The Line of the Ball That Rolls
Have you ever noticed that some parts of your body live in vivid, clear detail in your awareness, while others feel like blank spaces on a map?
Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais observed that we are highly conscious of certain parts of ourselves, while other areas remain largely hidden from our everyday awareness.
The hands, feet, and face are usually easy to sense. The space between the shoulder blades, the lower spine, and the back of the head are often much less familiar.
As the ball rolls through the back, chest, pelvis, and limbs, we create a simple internal laboratory for exploration and discovery. You will learn to use the parts of yourself you can easily sense to illuminate, organize, and bring new clarity to areas that are less familiar. The well-mapped parts of yourself become guides into the areas that are not yet fully known.
“The well-mapped parts of yourself become guides into the areas that are not yet fully known.” — Al Wadleigh
Along the way, you may discover that imagination is far more than fantasy. A clear internal image can improve coordination, refine your sense of effort, and reveal new possibilities for movement. As your self-image becomes richer and more complete, movement often becomes lighter, easier, and more efficient.
What We Will Explore Together
Expand Your Movement Map: Use gentle attention and imagination to bring greater clarity to the hidden areas of your spine, ribs, pelvis, and torso.
Clarify Lines of Effort: Discover how force and support travel through your skeletal structure, helping to reduce unnecessary tension and improve coordination.
The Power of Imagery: Experience how imagination can influence organization, balance, flexibility, and ease of movement.
What You Will Notice
As their self-image becomes clearer, many students report:
- Easier bending, reaching, and walking
- Less unnecessary effort in everyday movement
- Improved balance and coordination
- Greater comfort in the neck, shoulders, back, and hips
- A calmer, more connected sense of themselves
In our final week, we will extend these principles into a curious lesson exploring the relationship between the eyes, imagination, and hip joints. Following the movement of an imagined ball, we discover how attention and imagery can influence the organization of the entire body.
This series offers rich material for long-time practitioners, trainees, and movement professionals while remaining accessible, gentle, and surprisingly illuminating for newcomers.
Come curious, and leave with a lighter, more unified sense of yourself.

Al’s February 22, 2022 lesson culminated in a whole-body side stretch that can only be described as exquisitely calming and healing. Usually, side-lying lessons are painful for me due to arthritis of my pelvis, and my hips often feel like they’ve wandered off by themselves to experience that pain. This lesson left my entire pelvis feeling loose, mobile, quiet and present in my awareness. I’m always grateful for Al’s insights at the end of a lesson, and those of the other students. As always, my gratitude!
I find the weekly class restore my sense of body movement. Al’s voice and word choice makes it easy to follow during the instructions.
Al’s lessons are wonderfully uplifting, literally and figuratively. I often walk much taller with much more awareness, pleasure, and grace. Thank you!
I absolutely LOVE this phenomenal class!!! Thanks to this class; I’m experiencing real, substantial relief (from pain) for the first time. This class transforms you from the inside out. The instructor does a fantastic job. His mastery on the subject translates into an extremely smooth and expertly guided lesson. I’m both amazed and satisfied with how much progress I have already made. This class is more than worth it; take the dive, try it out!
