Through these lessons, we make a fascinating exploration of sensing what inhibits light and natural movements of hopping. Through carefully guided sensing, we become aware of our limiting habits and make a conscious decision to let them go. The end result? A lighter and freer hop.

To hop or not to hop?

For most of us, hopping was a natural part of our childhood and development. As adults, most of us don't hop. If we do, we find it challenging, limited by the layers of habits we have built up over time.

"What at first seems like an unusual instruction to hop up and down enjoyably makes sense as each lesson progresses. Al’s precise descriptions of the various mini-lessons within the lesson is augmented by his conceptual explanations of Feldenkrais physiology and neurology, all in layman’s terms. We come to understand and to experience why these seemingly strange little movements in the lesson improve our ability to hop with ease and, of course, to enliven our everyday functioning in our bodies."

- Robin C., Longmont, CO

What makes hopping difficult?

Our first approach to something challenging like this is to try harder and put more effort into it. To hop harder and more effortfully.

But that is just the opposite of what we need to do. It is our unconscious habits that make hopping difficult. In Feldenkrais's words, "It is necessary to take away the disturbances" that make hopping difficult.

"You see, it is not necessary to train at hopping to be able to hop better. It is necessary to learn to take away the disturbances."
- Moshe Feldenkrais, Alexander Yanai Lesson 282 Basis of hopping 2

These lessons have helped me begin to get a more stable sense of my feet and balance. As a person with osteopenia and relatively frequent fractures, these lessons have heightened my sense of ankle awareness and increased my sense of safety doing the hopping activities. I plan to go back through the lessons several times to heighten the positive effects I have experienced. I highly recommend it!

Very interesting lesson, effective and beneficial. But I do think that the rest periods were maybe a bit too hurried. You got to lie down on your back, and got up again… there was very little time for observation of changes. Of course, one could arrange to stop the audio as needed.

I’m so grateful to have come on these lessons, they are tremendously insightful. It has helped improve my dancing and martial arts. I also am recovering from a previous injury, while mostly healed I still feel an imbalance and some discomfort and occasionally pain. These exercises have helped bring about more balance, ease the discomfort, and keep pain at bay. I plan on circling back and repeating the lessons so I can finish healing and better my dance/martial arts skills!
